Weekly Torah Gatherings – Wed 7/2

Life and Death are in the power of the tongue: Who is speaking and who is listening, and who is affected . . .

It is no longer simply the speaker of antisemitic tropes, the words, or what any of the phrases have come to mean — “it” now includes the effect “it” has on the audience.

And for the record, “it” is not them, “it” is us.

Audience?

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ בְנֵֽי־יִ֠שְׂרָאֵ֠ל ל־הָ֨עֵדָ֤ה מִדְבַּר־צִן֙ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב הָעָ֖ם בְּקָדֵ֑שׁ וַתָּ֤מת שָׁם֙ מִרְיָ֔ם וַתִּקָּבֵ֖ר שָֽׁם׃

The Israelites arrived in a body at the wilderness of Zin on the first new moon, and the people stayed at Kadesh. Miriam died there and was buried there.

וְלֹא־הָ֥יָה מַ֖יִם לָעֵדָ֑ה וַיִּקָּ֣הֲל֔וּ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹֽן׃

The community was without water, and they joined against Moses and Aaron.

וַיָּ֥רֶב הָעָ֖ם עִם־מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֵאמֹ֔ר וְל֥וּ גָוַ֛עְנוּ בִּגְוַ֥ע אַחֵ֖ינוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃

The people quarreled with Moses, saying, “If only we had perished when our brothers perished at the instance of יהוה !

וְלָמָ֤ה הֲבֵאתֶם֙ אֶת־קְהַ֣ל יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה לָמ֣וּת שָׁ֔ם אֲנַ֖חְנוּ וּבְעִירֵֽנו׃

Why have you brought יהוה’s congregation into this wilderness for us and our beasts to die there?

וְלָמָ֤ה הֶֽעֱלִיתֻ֙נוּ֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם לְהָבִ֣יא אֹתָ֔נוּ אֶל־הַמָּק֥וֹם הָרָ֖ע הַזֶּ֑ה לֹ֣א ׀ מְק֣וֹם זֶ֗רַע
Why did you make us leave Egypt to bring us to this wretched place . . .

Then and Now:

In our own time, let us also attempt to decipher who is the “intended audience”

Here, the pattern clearly begins to emerge: the Wedging of the American Jewish Community

Now is the time to understand what it means to propagate the phrase “globalize the Intifada,” and understand who is the “target” or along with its “listening audience.”

Here from our notes: It does not mean blowing up pizza parlors in New York. It is not the same as the waves of terror annually unleashed on Israeli civilians.

What it really means is the targeting of Jews around the world in order to drive a wedge between Diaspora Jewry and Israel, so as to choke off one of the major sources of support for Israel (material and political, but also ideological and spiritual).

The global intifada presents Jews with a binary choice: You can renounce any connection with Israel and denounce Israel and Zionism; if you do, we will shower you with love, place you at the head of our movement, and celebrate you as brave and moral. Or, you can decline to disavow the Jewish State and bonds of peoplehood, and face a range of penalties: You will be shunned, ridiculed, defamed, harassed, threatened, beaten and, yes, possibly murdered.

Of these tools, the threat of violence is *not* the most effective. For most people, especially most young people, being shunned and smeared as a racist, a genocide-supporter and “on the wrong side of history” is far more potent. It means social death. It is also legal and, once one controls the means of idea-production and social media, much easier to implement at scale.

But violence and the threat of violence are an essential component. As the Inquisition understood, thumbscrews and the rack are useful tools of persuasion. They make one much more open to a change of heart when one’s sense of self-respect, or sense of loyalty, or conscience might otherwise stand in the way.

Of course, those who do confess (renounce and denounce) will protest that they did so out of the promptings of conscience. No, no, the campaign of intimidation that has been rolled out across the world has nothing to do with my decision. I now see clearly the evils of ethnonationalism and have broken through the sinister Zionist mind control under which I was raised.

That is what it means to globalize the Intifada. The Jews of New York (not Tel Aviv) are its targets.

Excerpt 1:
Mamdani got three chances to repudiate the expression “globalize the intifada” in a weekend interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker. It would have been easy, and politically smart, for the Democratic candidate for New York mayor to say that he’d been educated about the phrase’s violent connotation and that he regretted not rejecting it sooner. Instead, he ducked each time, saying that although he does not use those words himself, (note: <–these are lies –>), he would decline to “police” the language of others.

So give Mamdani credit for this: He has the courage of his convictions. Now he ought to bear the responsibility for them, too.

Excerpt 2:
But a major political candidate who plainly refuses to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada” isn’t participating in legitimate democratic debate; he is giving moral comfort to people who deliberately murder innocent Jews.
